Why I built Footing

Small organisations deserve fast, well-made websites they can update themselves. Here is the platform I built to make that affordable.

The Footing logo

Most small organisations I know have the same website problem. A charity, a local business or a club gets a site built, it looks good for a year, and then the person who knew how to update it moves on. Events go stale, the news page stops in 2022, and the site quietly stops being useful.

Footing is my attempt at fixing that: every client gets a site designed for them, and a simple dashboard their staff can use to keep it current.

How it works

  • Staff write news, events and pages in the dashboard, with drafts, scheduling and version history.

  • Publishing rebuilds the site automatically, so it is live within a few minutes.

  • Each site is static HTML served from Cloudflare's network: fast, cheap to run, and with nothing to patch.

Why static sites

A static site has no server to keep up and no database to break into. Images are resized when the site is built, so a visitor on a phone downloads a small file rather than the original photo. And because each site is built for one client, it can look exactly how they want rather than like a template.

The best website for a small organisation is one that is still up to date a year after launch.

What's next

This portfolio is itself a Footing site, and the first client site is on its way. If you run a small organisation and this sounds useful, have a look at footing.page.
